PG LOCAL MARKET CRITERIA

After reviewing sustainable market practices in the US/Canada and local farmers markets guidelines (Monterey and Marina), Sustainable Pacific Grove offers the followiing criteria for proposals for a Farmers Market in PG. These criteria allow PG to to meet the action items from the Environmental Accords signed in October by the City Council. They also house what is called "a priority message" --- namely that relocalization infuses our economy by investing in the local, allows a reentry of local merchants into the marketplace, reestablishes local relationships and returns a sense of neighborliness and sustainability to PG. The criteria also frame the PG Local Market as a unique venture, unlike the criteria set forth in Monterey, Marina, Carmel or Santa Cruz farmers markets.

Criteria for submitting proposals for the PG LOCAL MARKET:
• A commitment to promote a sustanable food system linking farmers with consumers through the operation of the PG LOCAL MARKET and it's community building programs
• Fresh food vendors will remain separate from prepared food and those separate from craft booths.
• One booth will be reserved for non-profits/educational organizations and be assigned on a rotating basis •All vendors must use sustainable packaging
•The PG LOCAL MARKET will take place Fridays from 4-8

Booth applications will be approved with the following priorities or preferences:
+ sustainable practices
        + organic practices
        + farms within Monterey County
+ farms within the Tri-County area
+ Pacific Grove artists/craftspeople, organizations, distributors, stores

Any vendors who do not meet the above geographic criteria may petition to be allowed to sell at the market IF they offer a variety or diversity of product not available locally but do meet the sustainable practice criteria stated.

We would also think it appropriate that Pacific Grove businesses/restaurants be issued booths at a reduced fee to encourage participation while at the same time, linking them to sustainable practices to meet the criteria above.

Finally, a provision would be made to award the City of Pacific Grove funds to assist in meeting other Environmental Accord action items.

Respectfully submitted
