BACKGROUND ON THE U.N. URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL ACCORDS

The United Nations Urban Environmental Accords were initiated by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and endorsed by the UN Environment Program at the 2005 UN World Environment Day held in San Francisco.

The Accords recommend 21 Actions as guidelines to be used by cities worldwide for creating cleaner, safer and more efficient communities.

The application of the Accords is flexible in its methods and timing, within the Accords’ general framework, and cities are free to choose the Actions they will execute.

Signatory cities have seven years to implement the recommendations of the Accords.
