1. Signing up for Facebook

Go to www.facebook.com and enter your first and last names, email address, desired password (i.e. the password that you will use to log in to your account once it is created), gender, and birthday. Then click “Sign Up.”

Facebook will guide you through the process of adding a profile photo and profile information.

2. Search for your local sustainability group

Whenever you want to know what is happening around Monterey County regarding sustainability efforts, check the Citizens for a Sustainable Monterey County Facebook page. Go to: www.facebook.com/sustainablemontereycounty. The local groups’ pages are intended to provide more detailed information regarding the activities of each group. You can access all of the local groups’ pages under the “Favorite Pages” section of the CSMC page. This section is located in the lower left area of the page directly under the section displaying how many people like the page.

Alternatively, you can search for your local group’s page by using the search box, located at the top of every page. To locate the CSMC page or your local group’s page via the search box, enter one of the following page titles in the search box:

Press “enter” once you have typed in the full name of the page. This will take you directly to the page or produce a list of search results.

3. Using Pages

Once you have found the desired page, click on the “like” button:

Once you have “liked” the page, you should be able to post comments on the Wall. Click on the “Wall” tab at the top of the page, write something under the “Post” icon, and click “Share”:

4. Discussions

Now that you’ve got that down, try participating in a discussion! To do so, click on the “Discussions” tab at the top of the page, then click on the title of any discussion that interests you.

Once you click on the discussion title, you will be directed to a page that shows all of the comments that participants have already added. Add your own comment by writing in the “Reply” box and clicking “Post Reply” (see picture on next page):

5. Receiving email notifications about discussion posts

It is possible to receive email notifications that alert you when someone has replied to a comment that you posted on a discussion board. To do this, click on the “Account” drop-down menu, located in the upper-right corner of every page, and select “Account Settings.” This will take you to the “My Account” page. Once on this page, click on the “Notifications” tab. Once you click on the “Notifications” tab, you will see a page that looks like the one below:

Once you have checked the boxes next to each type of notification that you would like to receive, go to the bottom of the page and click “Save Changes.”

Logging in to CSMC and your Local Group's Facebook pages is a great way to stay in touch with the effort to create sustainable communities in Monterey County.
